Community Assessment Results 2009 In 2008 and 2009, ABC conducted a community-wide assessment to identify community concerns regarding quality of life. ABC uses these data to measure the impact of existing efforts and to contribute to the creation of new programs to address identified needs. The results are presented in tables and categorized by responses from the Key Informant Survey, Community Survey, and Total of both Key Informant and Community surveys. The Key Informant Survey was sent to 600 people identified by position as someone who might influence policy that in turn would affect the issues being explored. This group included elected officials, ministers, nonprofit directors, business and community leaders, and others. The Community Survey includes 273 completed Random Household Surveys (mailed to 3,000 randomly selected county households) and 480 returned Convenience Sample Surveys (additional surveys that were distributed using e-mail and at sites with significant traffic). If you have any questions about the survey or results, please email lhyde@illinois.edu. Food Environment Atlas Food environment factors-such as store/restaurant proximity, food prices, food and nutrition assistance programs, and community characteristics-interact to influence food choices and diet quality. Research is beginning to document the complexity of these interactions, but more is needed to identify causal relationships and effective policy interventions. The Atlas assembles statistics on three broad categories of food environment factors: Food Choices, Health & Well-being, and Community Characteristics. "The State of the USA (SUSA) is both a growing organization and the name of a planned website. The website is not yet active, but it is under construction and expected to be available in 2009. When SUSA's website is fully completed, it will display data from a range of public and private sources, including federal, state and local agencies; the business community; and nongovernmental organizations. The purpose of the [current] website...is to introduce audiences to SUSA's organization and its landmark initiative, which will assemble high-quality measures and data that can be used by Americans to educate themselves about the progress of the United States, to encourage an enriched civic dialogue and to support more informed public decision making." "The obesity epidemic is harming the health of millions of Americans and resulting in billions of additional dollars in health care costs. Rising rates of obesity over the past few decades are one of the major factors behind the skyrocketing rates of health care costs in the United States. And, U.S. economic competitiveness is hurting as our workforce has become less healthy and less productive. During the past 30 years, adult obesity rates have doubled and childhood obesity rates have more than tripled, while health spending has increased two percentage points faster than the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), growing from 8.8 percent in 1980 to a projected 17.6 percent in 2009."
